The Dolby AZ-1 In Flight Case

This is my pride and joy. This is the Casio AZ-1 MIDI strap-on controller that belonged to none other than Thomas Dolby. Thomas is one of my favorite musicians and has been since I was a teenager. Most people only know him for his 80s hit "She Blinded Me With Science". While that is, undoubtedly, a killer song, it is far from the best example of Thomas's work. It's not even the best song on the album it's on. It was his most commercially successful song though. If you were to give Thomas's best song a 10 then "She Blinded Me With Science" would rate a 7, maybe 7.5.

Thomas is what is known as a musician's musician. Not too well known in the public eye, but really respected by his peers. Astronaughts and Heretics is his best album although only his devoted fans are likely to have heard of it.

You can see the flight case this beasty came to me in. I could run it over with a truck and it probably wouldn't even notice it. It weighs a freaking tonne.

This keyboard has seen a lot of use as Thomas performed live on it from the mid 80s until the late 90s when he switched to the Roland AX-1. He tells me he preffered the old Casio over the Roland but the Casio has a bad sustain button on it and I guess he wasn't interested in fixing it. I'll have to get around to fixing it one of these days myself. For now I'll just assign the sustain to one of the assignable control buttons on the machine.

If you get yourself a copy of The Wall: Live From Berlin concert on DVD you'll see Thomas playing this very keyboard in the role of the school teacher.

I believe the last time Thomas played this keyboard live was at a special show he did at the Epicot Centre in '98 maybe? Anyways, Thomas is quite pleased the keyboard is now in the hands of someone who will appreciate it and put it to good use.
